Chris Lester (left) and Kayne Fisher, owners of Natty Greene's
Let’s face it, with the sad news about all the restaurants closing in @greensborocity, it’s refreshing to help a ‘North Carolina Grown/ North Carolina Owned’ business celebrate a milestone . . . and that’s exactly what many did on Saturday July 30th at Hamburger Square (corner of McGee and Elm Streets) in downtown Greensboro.
What better way to celebrate 7 successful years than a FREE CONCERT from bands Dead Confederate, The Constellations , and Cracker. Yep, you heard right, it was a FREE concert!
Natty Greene’s has come a long way from the early days at UNCG when Chris and Kayne used to sit and sip NattyBo’s and dream of brewing their own craft beer.
Join Natty's every Thursday at the Greensboro and Raleigh Pubs for $3.00 pints all day long!
This post if for the ladies of Greensboro who are looking for the latest styles from the hottest designers that will leave you plenty of wiggle room in your wallet.
One of the cool things we learned last night? That Mixed Tape Film is taking the big screen on the road. That’s right, FREE outdoor screenings with an inflatable movie screen! Mixed Tape Roadshows promises to bring Godzilla, Kung-Fu and Car Chases that you won’t find anywhere else.
Mixed Tape Film also recently teamed up with WUAG to bring 3 rare 35mm films to Greensboro, July 21st at Carolina Theatre. This is a treat for film buffs because, as Joe explained last night, one of these movies will not be seen in N.C. again. Be sure to find out all the details on this cult classic event.
So next time you see Joe, be sure to shake the man’s hand and thank him for making going out to watch movies in #GSO fun again . . . or better yet, give him a shout out on twitter and tag your tweet with #MixedTape .

What movie have you watched on the big screen thanks to @MixedTapeFilm?
A few weeks back I was tweeting about how amazing @sweetsoapscoffee soap was. Seriously, if you follow my tweets – you know I will take coffee any way you can fix it. . . and Ellen is simply an amazing woman who is doing what she loves – soap . . . but that is another blog post!
Besides, who doesn’t LOVE discovering a new locally owned store where you can meet who you tweet?!
If you have never been to their beautiful gift shop off of Lawndale Ave in Greensboro – it is a must visit! It is run by sisters Mary Ellen and Elizabeth who have an amazing eye for the must have items everyone is talking about. I found so many fun things that this will be my *GO TO* store for gifts like . . .
And if you ever need something monogrammed (like those cute aprons!) – be sure to ask about @mmamonograms who is right there at @meandestore and does simply gorgeous work!

Okay, we all have our favorite local stores where we know, without a doubt, that we will find the most incredible, one of a kind items . . . well folks. . . meet @designarchives.
For years Kit Rodenbough has shared her passion for vintage fashion with Downtown Greensboro and now, after 4 years of being on Tate Street, she is back on Elm Street and better than ever! The new location is, a as she describes it, a “double store” with the fun, funky and classy vintage items occupying one side and on the other side is filled with spaces for rent – where artists are filling up stalls with their art, crafts and furniture. It is an amazing addition to downtown Greensboro. (If you are an artisan and want in you better hurry! Spaces are going quick!)
I LOVE hats! and Design Archives always has the best selection of quality vintage accessories!
I recently made my first visit to the new location and found a delicious hat that reminded me of one I saw Kate Middleton wearing . . . all it needed was a few feathers!
So, next time you’re at the Green Bean getting your caffeine buzz on – be sure to stop in across the street on South Elm and say hello.

Catching up with the morning social news when I came across this great article from Jolie O’Dell over at @mashable - they mention that the post ‘originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.’
It’s a great read and touches on something I’ve been saying for years. . . YOU are the best voice for your company. YOU are the reason your company is successful.
Now I’ve worked with people who did not “get” social media and did not have their “a ha” moment in the beginning of their efforts because social media was just one more thing to do for their company . . . like buying a yellow pages ad or printing out post cards.
But Social Media – in order to be effective and truly help your small business or personal brand thrive – has to have your personality come through. Engagement with your fan base and followers is key.
“Collier says that while there are lessons to be learned from larger corporations’ social media campaigns, the most important part of bringing your business online for customer interaction is that you’re creating a personality for your company and giving your business a face. “When you engage the community, you personalize your business. Your business is no longer a store or a website: It’s a person.” And at that point, Collier says, it’s vital to communicate promptly and personally, which can be time-consuming.”
I recently attended a seminar for the furniture and design industry and overheard the woman in front of me say to her neighbor “Social Media is a waste of my time. I could actually be doing things for my clients rather than play around on the computer telling people what I had for breakfast.” WOW. Talk about being out of touch with her demographic. But this sentiment is common among those who don’t yet see the value in online relationships and business growth.
Jolie offers some fantastic advice for those of us who are interested in learning how to improve how we use social media for customer service. She covers :

Admittedly it was an ambitious task to gather the litterati of the triad and ask them *not to make small talk.
Attendees included Stewart Pittman, author of Viewfinder BLUES, Parke Puterbaugh, author of Phish: The Biography, Brian Clarey, author of The Anxious Hipster and Other Barflies I’ve Known as well as Bill Moore , co-author of Ampeg: The Story Behind the Sound.
Brian Clarey, Jo Maeder and Stewart Pittman
Small talk was made none the less – and Jo was ready with a generous supply of ear plugs for anyone who asked.
It’s no surprise that so many showed with books in hand – there was a lot of local excitement over this seemingly strange but sexy concept and The BookUP was the media darling of the Triad for weeks leading up to the event.
Jo was especially honored to read words of encouragement for the Book UP from @DrMayaAngelou -
“It is easier for me to trust people who read than those who talk, and even those who talk about reading. Writers need readers desperately and whether they know it or not, readers need writers desperately.
Local Authors Bill Moore and Brian Clarey exchange thier authographed books at The BookUP
One hand washes the other. The aspect of one hand trying to wash itself is pitiful. But, when the two get together, Ah! There’s a possibility of success.
I support The BOOKUP and let us all say, “Here’s to BOOKUP”!
With nearly 40 people in total gathering to share their love of books – we have gathered an impressive list of tomes from all who attended. If we missed your book please let us know in the comments!
